Vice President, Operations (#3099)

The company provides a wide range of construction management and general contracting services to local private and public sector clients in the commercial, light industrial and institutional sectors from offices located in Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Saskatoon including: Education, Health Care, Recreation, Hospitality, Retail, Office, Food Industry and Industrial.
The company is recognized for its expertise in construction management and design-build as well as its general contracting capabilities. The corporate emphasis is to build cooperative, long-term relationships with clients, consultants and trade contractors, resulting in the increased certainty of project completion on time and on budget.
The Position
Key areas of responsibility include:
- Responsible, as a member of the Executive, for the strategic planning and growth;
- Overall accountability for effective operations; external and internal stakeholder satisfaction; project performance; business plan execution; and profitability;
- Lead, coach, monitor and hold Division Vice Presidents accountable for the development and delivery of business plans in accordance with the company’s vision for long-term success;
- Establish, monitor, report and hold Divisions accountable for compliance with Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Program, standards and regulations;
- Build and maintain positive and collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholder groups to promote acceptance for initiatives and ensure objectives are delivered;
- Develop systems, processes and forums to capture and apply lessons learned to promote project delivery efficiency, reduce risk and increase quality and client satisfaction;
- Set individual priorities and performance objectives for Division Vice Presidents and other direct reports; provide ongoing mentoring, coaching and performance feedback;
- Develop and manage the annual company operating and capital budgets with the assistance of the Division Vice Presidents;
- Grow profitability and manage business risks;
- Build the management team, and develop a culture of accountability;
- Address compensation and labour relations issues;
- Areas of collaboration with:
- President: Unusual business risks, new market and regional sectors.
- VP, Finance: Risk management, division and project accounting, asset management.
- VP, Administration: Continuous improvement, talent acquisition and development.
- VP, Business Development: Project opportunities, new client opportunities.
Performance Expectations:
- Alignment of division performance with company strategic plan;
- Division goals as stated in Business Plan are achieved and company is well positioned for success for the foreseeable future;
- Zero lost-time accidents;
- Targeted backlog conforming to the company's business model is achieved;
- All client, consultant and trade relationships are managed and positive;
- Division Vice presidents are accountable for their own work and the accountability of their direct reports;
- “People building people” is implemented such that there is successful development of high potential employees including complete coverage for succession;
- Blueprint is practiced by management and employees at all levels.
The Candidate
The ideal candidate will possess the following education, experience, and personal characteristics:
- 15+ years of related industry experience
- Professional Engineering Degree (desirable)
- Strong leadership, communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to build and motivate a dedicated and cohesive team
- Large construction project experience ($50MM+)
- Accountable to both business market and team members
- Passion for construction industry
