There is more to building a highly effective, functional team than just assembling a group of ‘A players’. Professional sports have demonstrated, time and again, that simply recruiting the best players is not enough. A team must work together as a cohesive unit, complementing each other’s strengths and weaknesses, learning together and resolving issues effectively to have a winning season.

Whether a sports team or a business team, all teams need to be properly balanced to work effectively. When adding new members to your team, don’t focus solely on the requirements of the role but also on the larger team’s needs, in order to complement both professional skill sets and personality or behavioural traits.

Know what the critical roles are in your operation and avoid loading up on a particular personality type or skills set, or you could end up with a cohesive group of people who ALL fail to see a problem brewing because everyone is viewing it from the same perspective.

The more “points of view” on your team, the more likely you are to see the whole picture (including potential pitfalls), and the better your chances to make the right decision. And enjoy a winning season.
