Headquartered in Edmonton Alberta, Liquor Depot and Liquor World began operating as the Liquor Stores Income Fund in August of 2004 (TSX: LIQ.UN). With their continued success, achieved growth and planned expansion including the 2007 purchase of Liquor Barn, and subsequent acquisitions in Kentucky and Alaska the Liquor Stores Income Fund is providing excellent opportunities for their unit holders and their team. The Fund, which began as a 50 location operation in 2004, has now grown to 236 locations and has plans for future strategic acquisitions, and aggressive, growth.

The Position
This is an outstanding opportunity for a strong leader with the unique skill set and ability to balance the leadership, financial management, systems implementation and challenges associated with the rapid growth of a fast paced Edmonton-based public company. As the Vice President Finance you will be reporting directly to the company’s CFO and will be responsible for ensuring sound financial management systems, including directing and controlling the majority of the organizations financial affairs (finance, accounting, systems implementation, financial reporting and analysis for all retail operations) of the Liquor Stores Limited Partnership. You will lead a staff complement of more than 35 providing direction, coaching, mentoring and will be responsible for the accounting aspects related to the POS system implementation and integration. This is a high-energy business environment and the successful candidate will need to “fit” and be comfortable in this type of setting.
Key accountabilities include:
- Designing the administration of accounting and information systems and strategies related to records of assets, liabilities and business transactions for all facets of the business;
- Assisting in the development, implementation and maintenance of the company’s accounting policies and procedures in accordance with good practices of internal control and generally accepted accounting principles;
- Leading the IFRS and Bill 198 compliance initiatives;
- Managing the accounting aspects related to the implementation and integration of a company-wide POS reporting system;
- Developing internal controls, cash management strategies, budgets and asset management protocol;
- Managing accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and payroll;
- Preparing the monthly financial statements, including the appropriate analysis, commentary and management reports, for use by management and in the preparation of the consolidated financial statements and reports to shareholders;
- Providing data for financial and business analysis including, inventory, purchasing and store performance;
- Preparing and developing the MD&A, quarterly, annual and internal operational reports;
- Recruiting, monitoring and mentoring of accounting staff to ensure appropriate and strong staffing of teams;
- Liaising with external resources (i.e. legal and accounting) on topics such as acquisitions, leasing matters, quarterly reviews and year-end audit;
- Providing leadership and direction on special projects such as integration of financial systems and processes for future acquisitions.
The Candidate
This is an exciting and challenging leadership position in a growing company. It is critical that candidates possess the following education, experience and personality attributes:
- A recognized professional accounting designation – preference given to a Chartered Accountant, augmented by a commitment to professional development;
- A minimum of seven years of accounting leadership experience, preferably in a high volume retail or multi-unit environment;
- A self-starter with a highly energetic, results oriented work style combined with excellent technical, communication, and interpersonal skills;
- Confidence and the ability to promote and publicly represent the Liquor Stores Income Fund;
- Well organized, detail oriented, enthusiastic and confident with excellent problem solving skills and a roll-up-your-sleeves attitude towards work;
- Public company experience is required;
- A working knowledge, and the ability to prepare necessary documents to meet public company reporting requirements including MD&A and Financials for a public company;
- Solid team player with a high level of honesty and integrity and with the ability to make tough decisions;
- The ability to support, lead and develop a team of professionals, while also participating effectively on the management team;
- A working knowledge of hardware and operating systems including Great Plains, Excel, in-store POS systems and electronic communications (inter/intra net);
- Strong business acumen;
- Exemplary work ethic with the ability to work evenings and weekends as required;
- A multi-disciplined professional with outstanding analytical and problem solving skills;
- A definite business presence complemented with personal drive, resourcefulness, maturity, integrity and sound business judgment;
- Resiliency and the ability to maintain a sense of humor and outgoing perspective in challenging situations.
Location
This role will be based in Edmonton, AB and periodic travel will be required across Western Canada and the United States.
