The Position

Based in Calgary and reporting to the Director, Human Resources - the Manager, Compensation and Benefits will be responsible for the design, implementation, communication and management of total rewards strategies and programs that support Graham’s business objectives. These include base pay, pay for performance compensation, pension, benefits, and job evaluation programs. On a regular basis, the Manager delivers presentations on total rewards programs to Graham’s executive and leadership teams. This position will direct the work activities of a Compensation Advisor and Benefits Analyst.

Key Responsibilities/Functions

  • Evaluate and monitor the effectiveness of compensation plans and incentives with an emphasis of aligning total rewards to business goals.
  • Continually review and maintain the total rewards strategy (salary, benefits, bonus, perks, ad hoc rewards, employee ownership, etc.) to support Graham’s short and long term business strategies.
  • Keep abreast of trends in compensation and benefit plan designs, and use this information along with Graham’s total reward strategy to develop the annual Pay for Performance Salary program and Benefit Plan recommendations.
  • Develop, maintain and implement the annual Pay for Performance program; including conducting market research to determine salary budgets, pay for performance salary increase guidelines and salary ranges, and to develop and communicate the program to all managers.
  • Participate in the design, implementation, and monitoring of Executive Compensation programs.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with various levels of senior executives to strategically improve the compensation process.
  • Ensure alignment of compensation and benefits processes to company policies and practices.
  • Plan and direct the activities of a Compensation Advisor and Benefits Analyst in the development, administration and operation of the Compensation and Benefits programs.

The Candidate

Given the significance of this position to the future success of Graham’s total rewards programs, the following are required:

  • Bachelor Degree preferably in Business or Human Resources, with additional courses or training in Compensation and Benefit Program design.
  • CCP, CEB, or CHRP designation would be assets.
  • Minimum of fourteen (14) years of professional Human Resources work experience, preferably with at least five (5) years experience in a senior Compensation Specialist or Manager role leading the development and implementation of total rewards programs.

  • A solid understanding of HR programs, practices, and processes.
  • Advanced skills in designing compensation, benefits and incentive plans.
  • Experience in job classification and developing career paths.
  • Strong knowledge base and understanding of how to utilize HRIS to support effective performance management and compensation planning.

General Requirements

  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong analytical, mathematical and computer skills.
  • Strong planning, organization, time management and problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate discussions with Senior Management on business strategies and work plans, and to create key performance indicators.

Systems

  • Excellent computer skills including proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and the operation of HR Information Systems or software products, preferably with exposure to SAP and/or SABA.
