The Position

Based in Calgary and reporting to the Director, Human Resources - the Manager, Training & Development is responsible for developing and executing a corporate training strategy and programs that support leadership development, succession, and development of employee competencies.

This position will work with Senior Management and HR staff to define employee training, learning and development needs, to determine corporate training priorities, to determine the best training delivery methods, to establish training budgets, to source training experts and materials, to coordinate the development of internal courses and training materials, and to track and measure the improved productivity and performance resulting from the training initiatives. The incumbent will provide work direction to an Instructional Designer and in future, a Training Coordinator, as well as plan and coordinate the work of outside consultants and trainers.

Key Responsibilities/Functions:

  • Provide organizational expertise to senior management in defining training and development needs to meet Graham’s strategic goals and training objectives.
  • Develop and maintain a corporate training strategy and work plan that defines the purpose, roles and key deliverables of the corporate training function.
  • Manage the full cycle of training initiatives by identifying training priorities, determining the best delivery method, obtaining management support and approval for funding, sourcing or developing training programs and materials, scheduling and communicating training events, and monitoring and evaluating the impact of training on employee job performance and skill development.
  • Increase the organization’s intellectual capacity through aligning training and development activities with the development of core business and technical competencies based on an integrated competency model and specific job requirements.
  • Support the development of career and succession planning by developing job family career paths, skill assessment tools and training maps.
  • Oversee the development of employee training and development records, the development and upkeep of the Graham University content, and the publishing of employee training event catalogues.
  • Provide career counseling and planning advice to employees and managers to support the Performance Review and Employee Development process.
  • Recommend training and development policies and programs that support employee development and create a learning environment at Graham.
  • Track and report on the effectiveness and cost of all company training initiatives, including outside courses and programs.
  • Plan, coordinate and monitor the work of the Instructional Designer.
  • Direct the work activities of the Training Coordinator to ensure that all training and development events are planned, communicated, executed and recorded.

The Candidate

Given the significance of this position to the future success of Graham’s talent development and training activities, the following are required:

  • Bachelor degree in Business or Human Resources (Organization Development) or Post Secondary degree in Adult Learning.
  • A CHRP Certificate would be an asset.
  • Minimum of fourteen (14) years experience in adult education, preferably leading and managing a training service in a construction related company.

Skills/Competencies:

Job Specific

  • In-depth understanding of organizational training and development methodologies and adult learning principles.
  • Solid understanding of Human Resource processes and practices.
  • Understands the principles of HR Planning and Organization Change Management.
  • Proven ability to facilitate group discussions and presentations.
  • Exposure to competency theory and models.
  • Experience developing training programs and curriculums.

General Requirements

  • Ability to lead a team of Training Specialists and Consultants.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communications skills.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to resolve problems through collaboration.
  • Ability to prepare and deliver classroom training.
  • Ability to counsel employees on a variety of development issues.

Systems

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft software (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel).
  • Understanding of web based training software and LMS (Learning Management Systems).
