The Role

Based in the Calgary head office, the Controller will report to the Executive Vice President, Finance & Administration. The role requires an enthusiastic, outgoing individual who will have responsibility for leading the company’s accounting and client reconciliation teams and the delivery of finance, accounting and administrative services to the organization. The successful candidate will be responsible for producing financial information and reports, improving upon the financial and information systems, ensuring sound reporting procedures and practices, and maintaining and improving internal controls.

Responsibilities

  • Leading, coaching and developing the finance team (currently there are nine members but the team is expected to grow) and creating a talent pool to meet the company’s current and future needs;
  • Supervising and performing the daily accounting activities of the company, supervising the reconciliation process of client brokerage accounts and Solium’s money movement and fx trading accounts;
  • Producing the monthly financial report for distribution to the Executive Team;
  • Preparing timely and accurate consolidated financial statements together with Management’s Discussion and Analysis and public disclosure;
  • Attending quarterly Audit Committee meetings;
  • Ensuring optimum utilization of financial resources through budgeting, forecasting and cash management, including the monitoring of payroll, accounts receivable and accounts payable;
  • Maintaining and refining accounting systems that effectively and efficiently support management’s internal and external reporting requirements, and developing recommendations for improvements where appropriate;
  • Overseeing the refinement and management of the internal controls, including the CEO/CFO certification requirements;
  • Interacting with other divisions as it relates to the setting of accounting policies and procedures and the analysis of financial information; and,
  • Ensuring compliance with government and reporting regulations, including the Company’s continuous disclosure obligations.

The Candidate

The company is going through a rapid growth phase and is looking for someone who is flexible and able to adapt to change and growth. As a key member of the management team the candidate must possess the following skills and attributes:

  • A Chartered Accountant designation augmented by a commitment to professional development;
  • A minimum of 5 years of increasingly senior financial experience;
  • A multi-disciplined financial professional with outstanding analytical and problem solving skills;
  • Well organized, detail oriented, enthusiastic and confident with excellent problem solving skills and a roll-up-your sleeves attitude towards work;
  • Solid team player with a high level of honesty and integrity;
  • Public company experience, including a working knowledge of public company reporting and CEO/CFO certification requirements;
  • A definite business presence complemented with personal drive, resourcefulness, maturity, integrity and sound business judgment;
  • A self-starter with a highly energetic, results oriented work style combined with excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • The ability to support, lead and develop a team of professionals, while also contributing effectively to the management team;
  • Previous knowledge of the Navision accounting software would be considered an asset.
