Think Like a Pilot - June 9/09

Many organizations are facing the need to cut staff in order to survive the recession, but cutting too much can sometimes be worse than not cutting enough.

Executives could take a lesson from pilots in this situation. Pilots are trained to deal with turbulence by making small, careful corrections to right the aircraft, in order to prevent overreactions that can cause disastrous loss of control.

Companies can benefit from the same approach to downsizing by starting with small changes to determine how they will affect the operation, and making incremental adjustments as issues are resolved. By working through smaller, more frequent changes, you can safely navigate your organizational aircraft through any kind of rough weather.
